While the Republicans bash the Commander in Chief during wartime, he pushes for jobs incentives for veterans of those same wars

NYT: Obama Ends Jobs Bill Bus Tour http://mobile.nytimes.com/2011/10/20/us/politics/obama-unveils-business-partnership-to-boost-military-hiring.xml

Now, the president has a meaty, if politically divisive, bill that he is avidly selling. This week, the White House scrapped the town-hall format in favor of traditional campaign-style speeches, where Mr. Obama presented his proposals and assailed Republicans for blocking them. Speaking to 2,400 troops at the base, Mr. Obama outlined the proposal to give companies a tax incentive to hire veterans. Unlike other parts of the jobs bill, that provision, which is also likely headed for a Senate vote as a separate measure, has won the support of Republicans. “When I first proposed this idea to a joint session of Congress, people stood up and applauded on both sides of the aisle,” Mr. Obama said to noisy applause. “So when it comes for a vote in the Senate, I expect to get votes from both sides of the aisle.”

This is an issue that needs more attention.   The unemployment rate for veterans of the GWOT is about 3-4% higher than for everyone else.   As we scale back deployments and recruitment, and government spending on soldiers, many more will shift into that veteran category.

There is a real and pressing need to get all types of Americans working again, veterans more so.   Here’s a plan in the table…let’s do something, eh?

Pragmatic Policy and Record Deportations mean NOTHING to anti immigrant groups

Obama’s deportation record: inside the numbers – CNN.com http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/19/politics/deportation-record/

The administration is “playing a double game,” argued Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors tighter immigration restrictions. “They’re telling (pro-immigration) advocacy groups that they’re focusing on the worst of the worst” by committing more resources to the most dangerous undocumented immigrants. “But they’re telling the broader public they’ve achieved record levels of deportations. It’s a clever spin.” So what are the facts? Nearly 400,000 individuals were removed from the country in fiscal year 2011, which ended September 30, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. ICE Directorohn Morton trumpeted the news, calling it the result of “smart and effective immigration enforcement” that depends on “setting clear priorities for removal and executing on those priorities.”

So we deport a record number of people, many of them violent criminals (the focus of scant resources).  Critics, which are always going to critical, complain that Obama didn’t deport everyone and spend no money doing it.

After watching what happened in Alabama, and how the ideologues reacted to that, don’t expect them to allow reform to happen even with record levels of enforcement.  There is simply no level of enforcement that will satisfy them.

Ignore them, and do what is right.

Burning books in a Warzone? Checks context….Approves

Some jerk sent us two boxes of this awful book (SPOILER ALERT: George Washington – Patriot; George Soros – Pinhead) instead of anything soldiers at a remote outpost in Afghanistan might need, like, say, food or soap. Just burned the whole lot of them on my Commander’s orders.

via everqueer (Some jerk sent us two boxes of this awful book…).

I have to think, honestly, that if someone sends you a bunch of books in a warzone saying how your Commander-in-Chief is a pinhead, but some loudmouth entertainment reporter is a True Patriot, the question really becomes about the most efficient/creative way to destroy them.

Lions, tigers, and bears? No, really

Schools close as lions, tigers, bears on the prowl in Ohio – CNN.com http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/19/us/ohio-animals-on-loose/?hpt=us_c1

(CNN) –Flashing signs on the highways in eastern Ohio warned motorists Wednesday: Exotic animals on the loose. Call 911. Schools shuttered and some frightened residents said they were hunkering down in their homes as sheriff’s deputies hunted lions, tigers, leopards and grizzly bears that escaped from a preserve after the death of the owner. Police have not yet said how Terry Thompson died, but Zanesville Mayor Howard Zwelling told CNN Wednesday that Thompson freed the animals from their pens and then shot himself.
