House GOP Meets on Payroll Tax – WSJ.com http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204012004577074151943782124.html
The Democratic bill extending the tax cut for an additional year, which would have been funded by a surtax on those earning more than $1 million a year, won a 51-49 majority, short of the 60 needed for passage.
More surprising was the fate of the Republican version, which would have been paid for by shrinking the federal work force. It was blocked 20-78, with all Democrats and 26 Republicans voting no. Earlier this week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) had said most Senate Republicans favored extending the payroll-tax cut.
When even the WSJ is calling out Turtleface for being horribly spent, you know things are whacky.
And yes, that headline hint is r ight. The waaay over-cited stat cited in the headline is based on federal income taxes. This a payroll tax cut…leading to the strange situation where we are talking about extending a tax cut to people that most of the GOP think doesn’t pay taxes.
Must be election season.
