No really though, he’s not an idiot is the sense that he’s incapable of processing information. What he does is *pander to idiots*, hence appearing as one.
There is a subtle distinction as he, himself uses this distinct to deflect blame for his own actions by considering himself a victim of the response to his “idiotic” statements.
Thus building goodwill in the army of idiots that don’t get his shtick.
